ABOUT THE BOTSWANA DEFENCE FORCE

Introduction

The Botswana Defence Force was established in 1977 as a national defence institution. From its earliest years, the Force developed into a modern, disciplined and professional organisation responsible for defending Botswana's territorial integrity, sovereignty and national interests.

The BDF was born out of Botswana's need for a dedicated defence capability during a turbulent regional security period in Southern Africa. Established by the BDF Act No. 13 of 1977, the Force began with 132 personnel drawn from the Police Mobile Unit.
