Who we are

ABOUT BDF

The Botswana Defence Force was formed by an Act of Parliament called the BDF Act NO 13 of 1977 on the 14th of April 1977. The BDF mission was set up as to defend Botswana’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and national interests.

At its establishment, one hundred and thirty-two (132) men were drawn from the Police Mobile Unit together with the then Deputy Police Commissioner of the PMU, Mr Mompati Sebogodi Merafhe, who was then commissioned and appointed the Commander of the newly formed Botswana Defence Force. He started his responsibility at the rank of Major General, his second in Command was Seretse Khama Ian Khama at the rank of Brigadier.

A calling to serve your country and your community.

BDF continues to grow professionally as a people centric force. In line with this endeavor, and many other transformational strategies geared towards taking the Defence Force to the people, the BDF has introduced Satellite Recruitment Centres to extend its recruitment services to cover the wider disposition of the country. Amongst many others, the BDF is in constant search for dedicated personnel to serve under the following disciplines:

Infantry

Military units that fight on foot, typically with rifles, machine guns, grenades, mortars and in modern day times in mechanised platforms.

Aviation

The aerial warfare service branch, that primarily conducts warfares and provide services on air.

Mechanics and Repair Technicians

The logistics enablers behind military tactics. Provides engineering support across the whole engineering spectrum and is responsible for maintaining and repairing the entire BDF equipment.

Administration

Custodians of techniques, systems, services, policies, rules, procedures in the military for BDF departments, agencies, and other services involved in the running of the BDF to include managing military personnel. This is inclusive but not limited to ICT, Legal Services, Human Resource Management Services, Welfare Services, Finance, Chaplaincy etc.

Health Care Practitioners

Ensure that the entire BDF Community receives dedicated medical care to maintain the required military readiness and efficiency.



BDF COMMANDS

The BDF consists of the BDF Headquarters, located at Sir Seretse Khama Barracks (SSKB).It exercises overall command, control and general supervision of the defence force. The Ground Forces Command with its headquarters located at Glen Valley Barracks. Air Arm Command located at Thebephatshwa Air Base (TAB). The Defence Logistics Command with its headquaters at SSKB and numerous Independent Unit offering various support services to the entire defence force.

BDF OPERATIONS

Botswana as a sovereign and responsible member of the United Nations with a functional democracy. The BDF has participated in UN peace keeping missions to include among others, Operation Restore hope(1992), Operation UNOSOM II (1993-1994), Operation UNOMOZ(1994) and several other military observer missions in Africa. Locally the BDF has conducted several disaster recovery operations across the country and continues to be pivotal in antipoaching operations in Botswana.

However, the BDF also contributes to the broader social development in the nation by undertaking activities that are aimed at benefiting disadvantaged members of the society, the community and the nation at large.
